Michael J. Fox's charity is suing its former laboratory claiming it set back import Parkinson's Research and cost the foundation millions of dollars.
Gossip Cop reports that the Michael J. Fox Foundation filed a lawsuit Friday against the Coriell Institute for Medical Research - an independent nonprofit facility - claiming someone in the lab left a freezer door open in April.
The open door meant more than 25,000 specimens collected from Americans and Australians both suffering from Parkinson's Disease and healthy individuals were destroyed, the suit claims.
The actor - who suffers from the disease - and his organization claim that while the biosamples had to be stored at -112 Fahrenheit and so they thawed out and were no longer usable for the study.
According to Gossip Cop, the suit says the samples were worth more than $3.5 million and the incident has done untold damage to the five-year $45 million project and Parkinson's research as a whole.
The Michael J. Fox Foundation is suing for breach of contract, negligence, and is seeking unspecified damages.
Just after the incident occurred, the foundation released a statement saying they had investigated the facility and were moving all samples to Indiana University.
In the statement the foundation said: 'The compromised biosamples were obtained, collected and processed at a substantial cost so that analyses can be performed by looking at specific points in time of study participants? lives and in parallel with a wide array of clinical and imaging markers.
'Loss of the samples also has caused delays in and additional costs to the studies, and will continue to do so, as study leaders? time and attention is necessarily diverted from primary goals to address the ramifications of the loss.'
The foundation was established by Michael in 2000, and has since invested more than $350 million in Parkinson's research...
