| Here's my test results, I've had it for 2mths, took Macrobid, seemed good, cleared up. Stopped Macrobid, next day instantly knew horrible fish smell and milky urine. Never has a uti smelled this gross fishy smell ever! Took another sample in and this time it's not sensitive to Macrobid. In your experience what is the best antibiotic for this weird uti w/Beta-lacamase" I have never taken any of these antibiotics listed before for a uti. it's a weird one? Any thoughts? Please & Thanks..... Dr. phoned, but I missed call, now not open till Monday. Final |

Quad hand, might this help?
I gave up on my left hand years ago, it was so tight and curled up I thought it was a lost cost. I found a series of videos by a quad on youtube about hand therapy. I only watched one of them and have been stretching my left fingers for several weeks and have seen improvements, my fingers have loosened up and I can even move them a little. So of course I will keep stretching them. I was thinking there might be something to help me along, on amazon I found several interesting things by searching finger stretcher but not sure what would be best. Thoughts on this? http://ift.tt/1YYERmp
Thank you

Old threads
I remember the forums going through a few upgrades over the years, and I seem to remember a post or notice about this before, but did some posts go missing / get deleted between one of the upgrades, or were they just moved elsewhere? (This was prompted by me remembering posting a thread a while back that I can't find at all anymore)

Permobil R Net brake error
My M300 has started to give me problems. For the third time in the past few weeks I was out in my back yard and my chair abruptly stopped when a wheel hit a hole. My R Net mono display flashed an exclamation point and then displayed "Brake Error."Through trial and error I found that by powering off, disengaging the brakes, rocking the chair a little, and resetting the brakes the problem goes away. It is a real concern right now because my right forearm is in a cast, and I cannot reset the brakes. I have to call for help. Is this problem normal? My good tech moved away and his replacement does not have a clue as to what is causing this. I tried replicating the problem with someone standing by to help but it will not do it then. Arrrrgh!

I collect SSDI and work part time. Made lttlel too much..What will happen?
So here"s my situation. After my accident 32 yrs ago, which rendered me a C6 quadriplegic, I was on SSD for few years till I got a job. I worked full time till few yrs ago when I had surgery for a pressure sore. I started collecting ssd then and continued after I went back to work part time. I was earning under the amount allowed and continued to receive ssd checks every month. The most you could make in 2015 was $1,090. It is up to $1,130 for 2016. I submitted all my pay stubs 2 months ago. Yesterday I get a letter saying I made too much for quite a few months and not eligible to receive for that month. Some months I made $2.00 too much and others up to $40. I did submit all the co pays for Dr. appts and prescriptions.. They sent them back and say they need statement from Dr. that they were needed to be able to work. Some months I had no co pays. So what will they do? Will they take the check for that month?
Also,I get paid every other week, 2x a month. I've been confused how they determine how much you make a month and can't get clear answers from them. I work about 18 days a month. I've been told that they go by when you work and how much you made during the days in that month. Others told me they look at the amount they deposit in your account regardless of when it was earned. So if I got pd Apr. 8th, a week of that I earned the previous month.
They also take into account $ spent for caregivers. Most of mine was paid by ins...but I did pay cash some months for a little extra help.. will they consider a signed receipt by a caregiver?
Sorry to ramble on here, but a lot of these questions I can't get answered till Monday. I thought I'd put this post up in case anyone had any similar experience or could awnser any questions I had.
Thanks much

Right Flank Pain
For about 8 days now I've had right flank pain. No chills, fever, or nausea. (do have diarrhea) Urine is fine, though not feeling the urge as much as normal. I haven't been as hungry either. The pain when it started was sharp and quick. When I'm sitting up I don't feel it as much (just like a dull ache). However when I lay down it hurts so much I can't take deep breaths. This has caused me to not get very much rest so I'm tired.
I'm not sure if this is muscular. It very well could be. I do have a history of back pain, though right now my back does not hurt other than its stiff in the mornings. The other day I did stretch over my cars console to open the door in the back. But like I said this pain started about 8 days ago.
Not sure if I should go to urgent care?

Best Places To Travel During Summer
vendredi 29 avril 2016
The United States has a lot of beautiful places to visit when the weather is warm. Summer always brings out the best in cities around the country. In this article you will learn about the best places to travel during summer. It's a good thing to know where to travel during certain seasons.
Miami Beach in Florida has some of the best weather during summer. Walk through the sand, shop at the nearby shopping centers, and enjoy fine dining all within walking distance from your hotel. Miami Beach has a lot of fun night activities such as drinking and dancing. Young couples that want to take their first trip together can make this trip a memorable experience. Families can also have loads of fun by visiting the local attractions, spending a full day at the beach, and eating great food all over the city.
Pismo Beach is a beautiful place on the west coast of California. This beach is a few hours north of Los Angeles. A lot of people overlook this beach but it is a great area to spend the weekend with your family. Within a reasonable distance you will also find convenient camping, hiking, shopping, and dining. Explore a part of California that is often overlooked because of San Francisco and Los Angeles.
New York is always a better place when the weather is warm. Throughout the winter months out of the year it can be very difficult to deal with New York. At some point in your life you are going to want to be in New York Time Square during New Year's Eve, but until then visit this city during summer. Take a tour of central park, go to the Empire State Building, and make sure you see the Statue of Liberty. New York has an almost endless amount of new things you can do. On every visit get New York styled pizza. A trip to New York is not complete if there is no authentic pizza involved.
Chicago is not as windy during the summer. The Windy city has the harshest winds towards the end of fall, during winter, and in the beginning weeks of spring. Once summer rolls around it is not that windy in Chicago. You can take a tour of the city an visit Millennium Park, Museum Campus, Paseo Boricua, and Humboldt Park.
Try to road trip one year during the summer. You will find a road trip around the United States one of the most rewarding experiences in your life. Try to visit as many states and cities as possible. Everyone has his or her own taste on which cities are the best. By taking a tour around the nation you can figure out which state you like the most. After you have your list of top places to travel then you will know locations around the United States to visit. Try to expand your traveling to international waters after you have explored the United States.

How often will medicare cover a new chair once you have a Dr. prescription?
I think its every 5 years, but I think I remember them changing the time limits. Curious because I am still using my 10 year old manual chair. I did get another one about 5 years ago, but I never use it. The "wheelchair dealer" screwed up the measurements so bad that it is seriously uncomfortable to sit in. I rarely use it except for when its down for the count with a flat or something like that. I argued with that dealer for soooo long. They finally took it back and gave me back a supposed new one withe exact same measurement problems six months later. Seriuosly, you should see how badly this chair fits me. Its almost laughable if it wasn't so sad and aggravating. HA! to think they still send me a 300$ bill every month or 2 for the 20% that medicare doesn't cover. OOPS.. sorry I am Ranting. haha. Does anyone know how often Medicare will cover a new chair? And yes, I am gonna use a different dealer this time.

Equipment providers?
United seating & Mobility is now Numotion. Who else is available that does this same thing of getting chairs to folks..? They completely cut Invacare chairs out of their product supply ordering & that's the chair I like & use.. Has anone had similar issues of having to change chair vendors or whatnot.?

Used Accessible Vans on Ebay
I like to search for vans nearby, just to see whats available.
It amazes me when I copy and paste the Vin into google and find horrifying salvage photos of what looks like a cream puff now.
On Ebay sometimes it states Rebuilt, but hardly ever Salvages.
Just thought I would pass this on.

Battling for oxygen at home
Yesterday my pulmonologist recommended standby oxygen in my home as my oxygen levels have not been where they should be. I use bi-pap overnight and naps but have been very tired for past 3 weeks or so. The doctor said using the oxygen at setting 1 would help me during the day - using maybe an hour or so.
They faxed the order to the business handling my bi-pap supplies. Two hours later the doctor's office called me to say the company would not provide the in-home oxygen as my test showed I didn't need it. (My pulse/oximeter reading at home is usually between 85 and 91, and read 87 in the doctor's office).
Just wondering if anyone has encountered this....that is, a medical supply company refusing to provide something like this, probably due to Medicare reimbursement to them.
I recently went through 4 months trying to get a certain bi-pap machine replacement (after they told me mine was so old that the water chamber was no longer available). They then provided me one with no alarm for escaping air, and I would not use it or accept it and had them take it back. They said they could not provide one with an alarm. I then met with my pulmonologist who somehow got them to recognize my neuromuscular diagnosis (Polio paralysis) and need for the alarm in addition to a "back-up rate" (which provides a little burst of air if a person doesn't take a breath), and the company then called me to say "you are now in a different category and we can provide a different bi-pap machine with an alarm and back-up rate". (The alarm on my old machine only kicks on when there's an air leak or if I fail to take a breath.)
Why didn't they tell me about this "different category"; their therapist had been to my home twice and knew I was paralyzed.
I am in the process of having the pulmonologist's office re-check the information on the prescription which was faxed to the company. The doctor had clearly told me and my husband that I should try to get the oxygen delivered yesterday or today!

Whill Model B
jeudi 28 avril 2016
I mentioned this early last year, and stopped following it because, at the time, I didn't think power chairs really mattered to me. After hearing all this talk about saving your shoulders though, I took a quick gander at it again, and it seems they've come out with a second model that HAS gotten FDA approval.
I haven't seen it mentioned on here in search, so I'm curious if anyone's taken a look at it, or tried buying one, and whether or not insurance has actually permitted this? I suspect most insurance companies won't, and will cite one of the existing meh power chairs instead.
Edit: Sorry, Model M, rather. Link here.

First wound in 42 years
Well, it's finally happened; got my first wound on the inner cheek of my right buttock. We think it was from a new mattress we bought. It wasn't as firm as our old one so when I went to transfer on the bed, my hand would go into the mattress rather than lifting my butt out of the chair; dragging my ass over the wheel. We exchanged it for a more firm custom mattress.
Went to the wound clinic last year and seemed to have healed up except for a small pinhole. A year later it got worse.
Finally the wound doc said it was time to close it and had a plastic surgeon come into one of my appointments. He said it's not near any bone and has plenty of skin to clean and suture it closed rather than having a flap done. Then will spend SIX weeks either in the hosp. or assisted living in a Clinitron type bed 24/7. Then start getting back in the chair for a while. I asked him if I could go to inpatient rehab for a week or two after to learn new skillsets and how to transfer with a board. It's been almost 43 years since rehab for me. So one in that time is something I can't complain about but it's still frustrating as hell.
I just hope I can still use the stander and my handcycle when I get out; they keep me sane. Will have to get a padded shower bench I guess and a seating eval before I leave. I'm kind of at a loss on dme equipment needed to keep me independent as possible.
It's so surreal thinking about how I'll be bed bound for six weeks. Wish me luck and any pointers on spending the time or other suggestions will be appreciated. Will bring the uke along and learn some new songs ll.

sodium docusate help
I need to know the max dose of this but cannot find it. i'm having horrible bowel issue, and i'm wondering if it coinciding with my increasing to 750mg a daywas coincidental. it's only been almost5 weeks since I was hospitalized with an ileus/bowel obstruction and i'm backed up again. i'm so freakin depressed and i'm sure that doesn't help.
btw since things got worse, 2 months now, I sometimes feel something, i'm assuming my intestines, on my right side moving around. what could that signal?

Recommended treatment for recurring C diff
After a course of antibiotics, I came down with a lovely C diff infection. My doctor prescribed Flagyl, and it got rid of the diarrhea within a day. I was thrilled with how quickly it acted! After completing the 10 day course of Flagyl, I started getting gassy and putting out mucus with my stool again. I talked with my doctor, and he put me on another course of Flagyl for 14 days. Again, my bowel movements became normal within 24 hours.
5 days after completing this second course of Flagyl, the watery diarrhea has returned. It's got the unique stench of C diff, so I don't think it's any sort of bug or other antibiotics-associated diarrhea. I visited my doctor again, and he wanted to put me on vancomycin. He warned me that it is expensive, and sometimes it takes several days to get insurance to authorize it (if at all). Even if my insurance covered 80% of it, that would still leave a $200 bill for a 10 day course!
As my doctor predicted, my insurance didn't automatically cover it, so he prescribed me another course of Flagyl. Do I just need to suck it up and get the vancomycin, no matter the cost? Are there any other newer medications for C diff that I could consider?

ADI Rides Disc Brakes
I have a 1-1/2 year old set of ADI disc brakes I am going to sell, I don't know what I will be asking quite yet. I took them off my TR.
I like them a lot but I have broken 2 tubes now and have decided to go back to the Tilite camber tube and D's locks. I really have no idea why they break on me where they do (ADI surprised too, and have replaced them no problem both times). It could be how I transfer from chair to shower chair or how hard I may drop out of vehicle.
They are the variable lever as shown in link. They are adjustable width wise to any chair.
I am waiting for the new tube now and once replaced and cleaned I will post pictures. One I have the bearing that presses on to the wheel hub popped out and regular bearing put back in I will list officially for sale.
Reply or PM if interested.

Which Restroom?
Hi there,
I'm a mom and guardian of my 2 adult step sons. In light of the recent Target Stores restroom saga, I got to thinking about what their rights are as far as an opposite sex attendant (Me) in the restroom.
They are not physically disabled and don't need help with toileting. The problem is safety. They are 33 and 34 years old with a mentality of a 12-13 year old. And they say things in the mens room that raises eyebrows and could get them attention that neither they nor I would want them to have!
For instance: Matt will say "oh baby that feels good" when he is urinating. Tom, who is 6'3", has stood next to my father, who is 5'6", and said "I'm big huh Dennis?", referring to his height!
One time when they were young, like 9 or 10 I was at a park and sent them in an empty mens room. Few minutes later a guy walks in with a huge bloody knife! Of course I freaked out and went in. The guy was rinsing the knife off, and had been fishing apparently.
Anyways...I'm wondering what their rights are? And what restroom do I bring them in? Mens or Womens?

Renacidin side effect????
I just recently started using Renacidin as a bladder rinse *less then a week* due to terrible sediment/clogging issues with my SP cath. I change cath every 3 weeks and religiously it is clogged and adheres to my bladder, which causes trauma, bleeding, when changed. I have read that one of the side effects of Renacidin is Bladder Contractions Causing Frequent Passing of Urine. Unfortunately, I think this is the ONE side effect that I am suffering. I do not feel the contractions of the bladder, however, the last two days I have had a diaper full of urine when I get out of my chair into the bed. Has anyone else experienced this side effect? If so was it a temporary effect or is it something that is going to happen as long as I am on the Renacidin?
Added info: We do the flush when I get into bed - 30cc instilled slowly, cath capped off for 10 minutes then attach a night bag. I'm on the night back all night so the urine flows freely. When I get up and into my chair I cap off the cath and empty bladder every two hours while in the chair.
Thanks in advance for any replies - I just would hate to find something that ends the encrustation to then suffer bladder leakage in return - not sure I like that trade off !

SoI have had chronic infections since my injury because of my very high-pressured neurogenic bladder. So I have called my doctor, I have gone to the ER, I've taken oral antibiotics like their Skitlies again and again it's the same routine. While of course over this time I change the way I manage my bladder Yet the outcome was more or less the same. For the last whileI completely re-altered by diet, very carefully watch my water intake but I don't manage these things myself, I have a caregiver so if they're busy and I dropped my water bottle or I drink it all I don't get water till they're available, sometimes they aren't as focus or make mistakes and get bacteria in the catheter, other times I don't want to wake them up at night for water. Any little slip up of the bacteria will jump on it whether or not no slip ups are the cause is unknown; nonetheless even still I kept getting infections, some serious, others I tolerate until they get serious you know the drill. Frequent infections has serious implications in the body, some Iwish I kind of didnt find out about; Taking antibiotics all the time has its own set of problems. My latest infection was too pretty basic bacteria's, only they were a little abnormal between the two of them they were resistant to pretty much every antibiotic other than one or two IVs! My doctor of course said go to ER get IV , But I know damn well that if I go down that road it a year or so after I've had to go on IV antibiotics three or four times eventually a bacteria will come that will be completely resistant, and I will die a very bad death boohoo.
So I refused, I ask questions did some research. I came up with various different solutions, I talked with my urologist about gentamicin irrigation she said that it can be very harsh on the bladder wall, and that you're likely will just become resistant to it. We've been taught about saline with a little bit of iodine old-school . But it was when I was talking with one of the owners of my physiotherapy clinic, great guy taught me a lot about how to treat osteoporosis, the complete ludicrousness of of modern medicine etc. Anyways we got on the topic of vitamin C, really long story! But apparently there are quite a few studies that megadosing vitamin C is a pretty impressive treatment in fact it is claimed that no virus has ever survived we are talking like 10,000 mg plus usually intervenous. I claimed that kidney stones were a possible problem, to my understanding and his that was one outcome of the trial with maybe two patients that were predisposed to kidney stones. Even my urologist wasn't too worried about that, she recommended just drinking a lot of water with it as a preventative, she didn't even say that it wouldn't work seemed as if she had heard about it before!
So I reluctantly got a high-quality source of vitamin C, pure. And I followed his directions, basically what you have to do is take a dose of vitamin C spread throughout the day until you reach bowel tolerance, that is your bodies indication that you are saturated with vitamin C. So I did, once I hit bowel tolerance I then lowered the dose. To my surprise after only two days, my symptoms pretty much went away. I'm going to take a urine culture in to see if I killed the bacteria, but I'm not in a lot of pain related to an infection anymore, and my spasticity is reduced .
I have read claims that vitamin C in high doses can treat the flu, it's antibacterial antiviral, anti-inflammatory etc. you can't overdose on it especially if you're taking good quality, and all the crap supplement that's filled with various other things.it's also claimed it can cure polio, herpes etc. even treat cancer! Obviously I'm sceptical, but I feel better who knows...

elevator broken (again)
Hello guys,
I'm a tenant in a build, and I live in the 2nd floor.
The building has an elevator that keeps malfunctioning, it broke for 6 days in February, broke in December for 3 days, and now it has been broken for 2 weeks.
The expected time to fix the elevator will be 8 to 10 weeks.
While the elevator is not working, I cannot leave my house, I'm stuck at home.
If this elevator problem happened one time, this wouldn't be an issue, the problem is that the elevator breaks often, it's never repaired, it's only patched.
I know the landlord has to accommodate me, but what can I do to make sure the elevator is properly fixed ?
What rights do I have, and what can I do ?
I'm pretty sure I'm not suppose to be locked at home for over 2 months while I wait the elevator to be fixed.
Thanks !

Does anyone know what an abscess looks like? Does it look like or does it form as a blister on the surface of the skin?

Crutches in the bathroom advice
My father is a walking para with crutches/afo's. The bathroom is very small. He walks in with crutches, and has a chair (currently a folding transport chair he can lock down) in front of the sink. Once he sits down he tries to manage without using his crutches (eg. getting to the toilet, or shower).
Curious - how/where do you prop your crutches, so they are reachable but not crashing to the floor often?

Schwalbe One exploded @ 125 PSI
Tried to pump my new Schwalbe One to 125 psi and one of them exploded.
I thought it could be faulty tubes, so i bought x2 new ones from Motion store and it happened again.
On the schwalbe site, it says that Schwalbe One tire is able to hold 145 psi.
Also noticed that at 125 psi, Schwalbe One tire starts to pop off the wheel itself.
Using Spinergy Carbon Blade 24s.
My old Marathon Plus hold 125 psi like champs.
Anyone had similar problems? or Anyone ever put 125 psi in their Schwalbe Ones?

Roho Retroback?
Has anyone tried the Roho Retroback? My 3 different rigid backs all irritate the axillary nerve under my right scapula and my sling back doesn't provide enough support. I was thinking the Retroback might be a suitable solution. Anyone using one?

'Paralyzed bride' opens up about pool accident
(NEWSER) ? Rachelle Chapman, the now-30-year-old paralyzed in 2010 when one of her best friends pushed her in the pool at her bachelorette party, is talking to People and Today in advance of a TLC documentary about her story ? a documentary that reveals, among other things, that Chapman is no longer friends with the woman who caused her accident. Though Chapman long defended her friend, refusing to name her publicly (she still hasn't), she says they ultimately drifted apart. Chapman tells People her friend was "distraught and depressed" after the accident, and the two supported each other. "The first year I made sure that she was OK, even more than me," Chapman tells Today. But as time went on, things shifted for both of them.

Health implications of SCI in old age
mardi 26 avril 2016
This has been a question/concern that's crossed my mind over the years, and has come back again with a vengeance in a recent relationship, as my girlfriend's parents are extremely against her dating someone in a wheelchair, because they believe that with age, I'll be less and less able to take care of her (and you know how parents always want the best for their children!)
So, I ask you folks here on CCC, what ARE the long term health implications of SCI as we get older and older? I have, of course, heard of the risks associated with long term catheterization, the obvious osteoporosis and atrophy issues, possible male reproductive concerns, and how we're more at risk for cardiovascular disease (though I've yet to see this one confirmed/discussed here).
While I am curious about the particulars above, my main question is: assuming we're otherwise healthy, does our quality of life or ability to provide for others get worse any faster than it would for non-SCI individuals? If so, in what ways? I imagine this also depends on your level of injury too: in my case, T-11/T-12 complete since I was 3, currently in my 30s.
And if there's a better forum to post this into (life, or relationships), suggestions are welcome!

Canadian athlete and forestry worker injured in work accident February 2015
i just saw this post when i was ordering a hat from the site i used to get my canoe paddles from. The injury was last year, i did write a note on the go fund me page informing him about care cure with the link, i hope he has made good progress, but forestry injury was brutal. I hope Canada has decent workers comp.

On February 19th, 2015, Mathieu St. Pierre was seriously injured in a work-related accident.
Mathieu is a ZRE sponsored athlete, top-performing canoe racer, and good friend of ZRE?s Bob Zaveral.

On Thursday February 19, 2015 a young Canadian forestry worker, Mathieu St. Pierre, was involved in a logging accident at 7 am in the morning at Lake Souris, Saint-Mathieu-du-Parc, Quebec. Mathieu was rushed to the Montreal Trauma Center for medical care.
In the accident he suffered damages to his diaphragm, punctured lung, his T-12 vertebra exploded, severe spinal cord damage at the same level, fractures to the ribs, damage to the aorta and pelvic fractures. Mathieu was put under a medical induced coma and placed on a ventilator to assist with breathing.
He endured four major surgical operations late Thursday night and into early Friday morning. On Saturday, February 21, Mathieu was extubated. The next step involved trying to use an oxygen mask to assist him to breath. This went so well that they moved on to the use of a nasal cannula which was a success. They also successfully removed many drains: the one that drained the blood out of his lungs, the Jackson-Pratt that drained the fluids out of his surgery site and the nasal gastric tube which was in place to prevent nausea and vomiting. He was able to drink some water and to chew on ice at this time. He will be transferred to the trauma intermediate level where he can benefit from a private and calm room to recover.
On Sunday, February 22, the Doctors informed Mathieu that he will never walk again. With such horrifying and traumatic news we must come together to provide not only prayers and support but funds to help him and his family with the expenses that they will incur throughout his recovery process.

Cheaper Alternative For The Segway Wheelchair
Hi I'm Milosz,
I produce wheelchair kits for the Segway. Since Segway merged with Ninebot I decided to make a kit for the Ninebot as well. It's much cheaper than the Segway. I've been testing it for some time now and must say that it's quite good compared to the Segway. Has quite a bit of features that the Segway lacks:
I will make a video comparison and post it on youtube soon.
Here are is a picture of it.

Colostomy questions
I'm a t3 12 years post injury. My doctors are really trying to steer me into a colostomy.
I have read several threads here and am definitely considering it after getting information from them. I do have a few questions that I didn't find answers to in the past posts. Was hoping I could get some answers from others that have one.
I am very active, and am concerned about transferring, and bending over in the chair. I live alone so my daily activities include cleaning, laundry, and of course playing guitar. Does constant movement in a manual chair create problems?
My second concern is the fact that I have allot of hair on my stomach. Will this cause issues with sealing a bag and will shaving around the site create problems with skin irritation.
At night does the bag allow you to roll in bed? I turn my self during the night when I do my IC
Finaly are there any activities that simply can't be done with a colostomy such as swimming?
