Used power chair- width matters?

lundi 30 novembre 2015

My husband has been denied a new power chair by his insurance (medicaid) until he has a diagnosis (they never would provide a manual one, we fortunate to find a very beat up used Quickie for $100 on craigslist). He has been searching for a diagnosis for years now, to no avail. He needs a chair that is a tilt and recline chair. He does not have any paralysis and can sit up under his own power. He has muscle spasms and extreme fatigue. Even sitting upright for more than an hour totally wears him out. So he really needs the tilt feature. We are currently borrowing a basic chair from his parents' church.

The very nice wheelchair supply guy gave us the contact info for someone who got a tilt and recline chair and then died 3 weeks later. The husband is looking to sell the wheelchair. My husband's measurements for the chair are 18 inches deep and 16 inches wide. The chair that we are looking to possibly buy used is 18 deep and 20 wide. This is the same measurements as the chair he is currently borrowing from the church. The guy selling the chair is selling it for $5000.

The wheelchair supply guy says that the width won't matter for my husband and his needs. That the base of the chair is going to be the same width no matter what the chair width will be. So it would be the same for going through doorways etc. But I've read online that width is really important.

Can anyone shed some light on this? Should we go ahead with this used chair?

For the record, I think I've been able to discern the chair's base is Quantum's Edge X, the chair part is something in the TRU-Balance 3 family, with TRU-Balance 3 Power Articulating Leg Rests, a Q-Logic 2 drive control system, an assistant controller in the back, and solid (not air-filled) tires. Beyond that, I haven't been able to determine from the pictures what the specs are.

Small intestine constipation treatment? Tegaserod?

I suspect there is a partial blockage or maybe just lack of peristalsis in the small intestine. It always feels bloated even after taking miralax or large doses (80 grams) Kristalose. This has been longstanding.

Are there other drugs I can take to help? Senna has no effect.

I read of a drug called Tegaserod (misspelled name in title, admin correct if possible) would that help? It seems to have been banned except for emergencies, for no good medical reason.

Florida vacation plans

dimanche 29 novembre 2015

I just bought vouchers to take the Key West Express from Ft Meyers to Key West. Has anyone ever stayed in Fort Meyers beach area, jumped on the boat, did Key West for a couple of days and came back? I'm flying to FL from Chicago and I'm trying to find the most pedestrian friendly routes and hotels closest to the points of interest. Any input would be helpful!

Paranormal activity

Something sad happened suddenly this Friday night. One of my neighbors suffered a severe heart attack and died. Relatively young guy (mid 50's - young to me). So my wife suddenly asked me at dinner last night if I feel okay. Have I been feeling okay recently? Any tightness in my chest, etc.
I said no, I feel fine. She then proceeds to tell me about how a friend of hers who appears to have a "gift" was at the house helping her look for an old ring. She's told me about this friend a number of times and although I am severely skeptical of such things, she has come up with some very uncanny "insights".
The woman goes into my office and suddenly says that she senses that there is an aura of someone who is very ill, with pains in the chest and so on.
This office its about 16 feet away from the house where my neighbor just suffered that heart attack.
I just had a check up and was given a clean bill of health, so I'm thinking that was his aura that she was sensing.
Damn!

Basal ganglia hemorrhage and long term care

samedi 28 novembre 2015

Hi all! My mom had a severe intercerebral hemorrhage requiring multiple brain surgeries in 2004 at the age of 50. This injury has left her with full paralysis (limited motion of her head and right arm only) and neurological eye problems. In just a few days it will be the 11th year of her being in her wheel chair. I'm hearing her complain more and more about her "ass" killing her and I notice her legs cramping and stiffening more frequently as well. With my father no longer around, and her fast approaching her 62nd birthday...I'm wondering what can I do to make her more comfortable?! The girls that work with her are amazing, and are all considered family, but have no prior experience in this line of work. We've all kind of learned together over time! So..my question: what advice would you give (products, remedies, exercises, chants..anything!) to help her be a little more comfortable in her chair and in her bed at night. She requires 24/7 care, but is at home. We're making it check to check so any thrifty ideas are especially appreciated.. Thanks in advance!

Permobil Purchasing Problems

Hi all,

I've been a longtime Permobil Vertical Stander user from the Chairman C2K (purchased by ChampVA/Champus in '03) to a C500 (also purchased by ChampVA/Champus in '09). I am not a Veteran, I am receiving benefits through my deceased father who was a Vietnam Vet. Both prior Permobils were denied by medicare and paid in full, thanks to ChampVA.

My last C500VS has been dead for the past 11 months. When we started the evaluation/order process back in June my dealer's estimate for the last generation of C500VS) came out to $51,652.95. My Dealer added some nice, but costly packages: "High speed base" (a $979 option over the standard speed base) and the Permobil Light Kit for $1,083. Do you think my dealer should have consulted me before submitting the quote to Medicare Champus? Because of that $51,000+ price tag it was denied. to emphasizes my need for this wheelchair I involved a congressional caseworker and hopefully light some fire under the VA.

My regional Permobil sales rep. & congressional finally reached a deal with the VA to pay for a demo C500VS (latest generation before the product line cutoff) Now the VA wants me to appeal Medicare's denial. My dealer received (in their words) "seems to be a denial, but my Physical Therapist and I agreed too it was a denial. When I last spoke to my dealer they told me, "their is nothing to appeal, its just something they (Medicare) don't cover. Out of the Medicare handbook my dealer told me this, "VI. Group 4 PWCs (K0868-K0886) have added capabilities that are not needed for use in the home. Therefore, if these wheelchairs are provided they will be denied as not reasonable and necessary." (from the Noridian Healthcare Solutions, Medicare Jurisdiction Part D). Do you think the funds can be pulled from one of two avenues we are pursuing, (1) an appeal of ChampVA's denial or (2) a congressional funding request?

I know I am asking a lot in opinion I am just a young adult college student on the break of loosing his sanity, lol.

Thanks in advance

Soon to be new Quad Dad - NEED ADVICE/Wisdom/Strategies

Hi, my girlfriend is having a little girl in January. I am classified as a C5/C6

i want to be the best father I can possibly be. I am looking for other quadriplegic dads who have experienced the complications of raising a child i.e (dressing, holding, feeding, burping, changing diapers, bathing).

Or quadriplegic mothers who have undergone these same obstacles.

i am eager to learn about assistive equipment, modification ideas, hands on strategies, anything will help.

i have ordered a DVD from the looking glass organization and I'm hoping that proves fruitful.

Best regards and much love

Mattress and Mattress Pad Suggestions

Hello Everyone,
I'm in desperate need of a new mattress as my back pain has become unbearable, keeping me awake all hours of the night. The pain is caused by scoliosis. I also have a lot of pain on my right rib cage when sleeping on that side, there's no redness there but I'm assuming it's from pressure. Up until a couple of months ago I knew I could get some pain relief from lying in bed especially on my right hand side. But ever since this rib cage and lower back pain problem has gotten worse, it seems I'm more uncomfortable in my bed than in my chair. I had tried a 4 inch temperpedic style mattress pad several years ago but found it was way too hard to move around on and ended up returning it.

I found a gel/foam mattress pad which also includes a fiber filled topper on Amazon, both pads are 2 inches. Just wondering if anyone here has had experience with something like this and if so how do you like it? Is it difficult to move around on? I was thinking that because the foam/gel pad is only 2 inches thick, it may not be that big a problem. Is heat a problem? I understand some of the foam mattresses retain a lot of heat.

Here's a link to the pad I was talking about

skipping clinical trials?

Im 21 years old, c6/c7 injury asia c and am curious about if it would be legal to skip clinical trials on certain treatments.
I've been reading up on lv-chabc and isp treatments as well as pten deletion and growth hormone. My question is would it be possible to get my hands on the isp and lv-chabc for my own treatment along with rehab and possible estim. What would be the legality behind if i wanted to take these aproaches out of states to have the treatment done before they go through clinical testing. I fully believe in the isp and chondroitinase gene therapy possibly also combined with a stem cell transplant. Im just 8 months in and reading 24/7 about possible treatments with the patience of a 4 year old and desperate to have my life back

Shopping for walking cripplesA

Hi,

This is a question for those of you who are walking, but not steady on their feet.

I am a thirty-year-old woman with cerebral palsy. I used to be able to walk fairly easily (without walking aids), until I had an accident at the age of 24, which shattered my right knee. After the fracture repair, I got a bone infection. This rendered me unable, for a while, to put any weight on my right leg at all. My left leg (which had always been the one most affected by cerebral palsy) wasn't much help, so I spent the better part of four years using a wheelchair nearly full time. Through a combination of luck, serendipity, and finally meeting the right doctor (I guess), the bone infection and most of the damage it left behind have been dealt with now. First I regained the ability to bear weight on my right leg. And then, slowly and with much PT, the ability to walk mostly unassisted. It's gotten to the point now where I never leave the house without a pair of crutches, but as soon as I'm in a safe environment where I can't hurt myself too much if I fall, I'll put them aside and walk unassisted.

So far, it's all good. The problem (and yes, this is a good problem to have): I had come up with all sorts of useful strategies to deal with daily life from a wheelchair. For shopping, specifically, I have a light-weight shopping basket that fits exactly across my lap when I'm sitting. I just put all the groceries in there and roll home with it in my lap. But now that I'm walking again, I'd like to go shopping without the chair (it makes it infinitely easier to reach the high shelves). Only, I can't carry a shopping bag or a shopping basket while walking, because it will mess up my balance, and I can't hold on to any walking aid while carrying something. A shopping trolley that I pull behind me won't work for the same reason, once there's any significant weight in it. What I really need, I guess, is something that I can push out in front of me and which, at the same time, is stable enough to help me keep my balance while I'm pushing it. I guess the ideal solution would be an actual shopping cart, but I don't suppose one can simply go out and buy one of those (I've looked online, but haven't had much luck). I don't feel good about 'stealing' one from the grocery store, either.

Any other ideas? How do other walking crips do it?

HELP!! Has anybody experienced a Invacare TDX tilt or recline or drive by itself?

My Brother has just had the most awful and terrible experience. While driving in his van with adapted controls (he is a quad) his Invacare TDX SR reclined all by its self. This resulted in him having a serious car accident. We need to know if any body else has experienced any thing like this please..... or if anybody has information about this being a fault.
He is ok only minor injuries but the van was out of control and he hit other vehicles and a woman who was crossing the road.

Adult coloring books

vendredi 27 novembre 2015

Has anyone seen the adult coloring books? They aren't R rated like they might sound but are very intricate patterns to fill in with finer pointed colored pencils as a stress reliever type of thing originally and now they seem to be spreading quickly. I have neighbors in their 70's and 80's passing around the books and pencils. Of course I had to have my coloring book too and here I sit controlling the pencil with both hands very carefully blocking in tiny little spots in very intricate mandala type patterns.

But even at 23 after three years I already have osteoporosis, even with all my physiotherapy. Has anyone actually spent six hours straight standing up? Was it hard blood pressure rise, did it cause a problem with b&b accident, joints especially ankles, hips and knees. Or did it actually has a large benefit on your daily pain and other problems? For the more dedicated of us let me know I imagine only if you have actually committed to this .

Nursing Home

I'm a c6 quad. My spinal cord is bruised I've been like this for 14 years. 2 years ago I had to a nursing home since then I have had 2 bed sores on my bottom. When I was at home I never got 1 on my own bottom and I was in my chair from 7 in the morning to 10 at night with no problems. Here at the nursing home I am in my chair from 10 in the mooring to 9:30 at night and now I have a sore on my ball sack. I do the same pressure releases that I did at home. I don't understand why this is happening. Can anyone tell me what might be causing this?

Leaking urine. One way or another..

jeudi 26 novembre 2015

Hello,
I am a quadriplegic with a suprapubic.. I've never had leaking around the superpubic or out of the penis (unless bladder stones) until this year (Year 19). But when I get up in the chair, I am experiencing that now.. My doctor said it's good that it is being released instead of being stuck with no place to go. Anyone else experience this?

It's too much for me.. I just want to go somewhere and die..

50 years to be thankful for

Fifty years ago on November26th my wife and I officially became partners. It was a time when visions of a ?New Frontier? and ?Great Society? danced in young people?s heads. Thus we began our quest to free humanity of disease and all other maladies plaguing the world. Alas, we have fallen short. But we have not given up. I am currently mentoring a couple of med students and my wife serves as a patient advocate for members of her church. We have not given up on love either. It binds us as tightly as it did 50 years ago.

We are enjoying a quiet Thanksgiving with the usual fare for dinner. Of course we will raise our glasses and give extra thanks for having had the opportunity to cruise the past 50 years together. We actually had a major combined anniversary celebration and family reunion back on July 11th. Our families wanted to celebrate with us, but we all agreed that Thanksgiving is the worst possible time to be driving and flying from all corners of the country. We picked July 11th because nothing was going on then. It worked out great because we had the city, airports, hotels, roads, etc. to ourselves. Attendance was limited to our siblings and their lineages. These are the family members who have played an active role in our lives over the years. Only two of the 40 who were invited were not able to make it. We had four generations represented. The main event was a sit-down dinner at a local party/meeting facility and everything was fabulous. The cake was chocolate with a raspberry filling and icing. We saved some in the freezer to eat today. The families presented us with a rather unique gift. It was a box of 50 Monarch butterflies ready to be released. The release was a big hit with the kids. Lol Afterward we had a photo taking session and a few hours for mingling and visiting by both sides of our families. Although that was the main event, family members began trickling in a few days before the celebration and some stayed afterward. That enabled us to visit with them in a relaxed setting. Everyone had a great time. There were not even any minor problems. The amazing thing is that this was all planned by a niece living in Denver. It probably would not have happened without the Internet. I have pasted a few photos below.

has anyone done the home recovery program from project walk?

I saw it on their site and wondered if anyone was doing it or had? It says you get access to over 150 instructional videos. Wondering if it would be helpful and if the home program gives you a clear plan for a comprehensive recovery outlook. If it was a good detailed program I think it would be worth the $199 price. Looking for others who have done it, thank you.

Looking and in need of ordering new stim pads for my rt300. $24 for shipping is ridiculous. Anyone find cheaper pads, or place to order them? I really don't want to go to cheap pads, that might cause burns... it's not worth it to me. But I'm looking at like $100 for one full set of pads. Ugh

D5 vertebral collapse

My name is Jerin. I'm 22 years old. I had a road traffic accident on april 9th, 2015 that caused a D5 vertebral collapse. I had a surgery on april 13th. The procedure done was D4-D7 Posterior Stabilization (globus revolve system), stabilized with pedicle screw and rod system. Its been almost 8 months since the surgery, but sometimes I feel pain on some areas of my back muscles. I cannot sit not more than 5 minutes without support on my back because of the pain. Is this normal for people who have accidents like this? Also what care should I take in the future because of this injury?

clear liquid diet or low fiber diet for constipation?

I feel constantly bloated and X-Rays show backed up with stool into the small intestine. I am currently taking about 40 mg lactulose/day and senna. But I never feel "emptied" and most of the time still feel bloated. This has been going on for many months.

Would it make sense to try a clear liquid diet (or low fiber diet) to try and clear out the small intestine? Currently I eat a plenty of vegetables, as I thought fiber was good for you. But maybe I should try another approach.

I did experiment with a clear liquid diet for about half a day, but got too hungry. So if there is a trick to it let me know.

Call to action - stop CMS cuts to funding for complex rehab equipment!

Dear CC Community Members,

Please read and take action on the attached. This action is supported by most national disability advocacy groups including the ALS Association, United Spinal, PVA and the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation. The requested action of contacting your Members of Congress will only take a few minutes - your advocacy is critical to getting Congress to take action.

Thank you!

November 25, 2015

CRT Stakeholders and Friends,

Late Monday, CMS published the 2016 Medicare fee schedule. As feared, the new payment rates include major reductions (as high as 30% to 40% or more) to complex rehab wheelchair accessories.

These cuts are being implemented by CMS in violation of prior Congressional legislation. They will dramatically reduce or outright eliminate access for people with disabilities who rely on individually configured complex rehab wheelchairs and critical components such as seating equipment, positioning systems, and specialty controls.

There is one last chance to stop this and protect access. We need to use the next 7 to 10 days to get Congress to add our complex rehab wheelchair accessory legislation, HR-3229/S-2196, to a larger bill and pass it before they adjourn in mid-December.

We have had discussions with our Congressional champions. The good news is they remain committed to working to getting our bill passed. But they can't do it alone. They have indicated that constituents must generate more support by connecting with their own representatives and telling them this is a priority.

Now is the time to contact or re-contact your Members via phone. The message is simple: "I need you to attach HR-3229/S-2196 to larger legislation and pass it before you adjourn in December".

Please go to http://ift.tt/1NfJlxP and use the links to make your contacts. Be persistent until you get a commitment and let us know if you need any assistance.

We can make this happen if enough people make the time to contact Congress. We will be providing further updates as we move ahead. Thanks for making this a priority!

Don

Raw footage from police dashcam. ***This is graphic video as a young person is shot so viewer discretion advised.*** The family did not want this video released but a journalist was able to get a judge to release it after pressure from activists and other journos. This occurred in October 2014.

It's hard to sit here in 20/20 hindsight as an armchair commenter (Grammar nazis see: http://ift.tt/1IfYOMK) ... apparently the kid had a 3" bladed knife and obviously was not listening to commands. He was found to be shot 16 times by police, even when he fell. A bit excessive, but police are trained to STOP THE THREAT. Now a police officer is charged with first degree murder.

StemCells Inc says spinal injury therapy shows promise

Nov 18 (Reuters) - StemCells Inc said its experimental stem cell therapy improved the functioning and strength of limbs in patients with spinal cord injuries, becoming the second company to report promising data on the treatment for such injuries.

The biotech company said interim results from the mid-stage study showed four of six patients experienced an improvement on two different scales.

The Newark, California-based company has been developing stem cells derived from tissues and modified to multiply into nerves to treat different indications.

Asterias Biotherapeutics Inc showed in August that its lead stem-cell therapy could improve mobility in patients paralyzed by a spinal cord injury.

StemCells' research centers around the treatment for spinal cord injuries, visual problems that begin at the retina and other degenerative diseases related to the nerves.

While StemCells and Asterias hope to treat patients who are paralyzed by spinal cord injuries, they differ in two aspects.

Asterias uses stem cells derived from embryos and hopes to treat patients soon after the injury. StemCells, on the other hand, uses stem cells derived from mature tissue and treats patients 10 months after the injury.

StemCells Inc said on Wednesday there were no serious adverse events reported in the study.

Chief Financial Officer Greg Schiffman told Reuters that the company's critical window was the next two years. "In a year from now, our goal would be to complete the enrolment in the study and get final results in 2017," he said.

He also said the company was looking for a partner to fund studies on the treatment for a degenerative disorders. (Reporting by Vidya L Nathan in Bengaluru; Editing by Don Sebastian)

Any experience with Hil-Rom products?

Does anyone have any experience or opinion on mattresses or bed systems by Hil-Rom? My mother has a C5-C6 level SCI since 2006 and the bed she has now is just not working for her. Would especially be interested if someone has used a Synergy Air Elite or a P500 mattress or a Total Care SP02RT2, CareAssist, or Progressa Bed System.

SP question

I have had my SP for nearly two years now and still experience a problem when we change it. It is like the opening in the bladder wall immediately tries to close back up. The new catheter slides in easily until we hit the bladder wall then there is a LOT of resistance. If we don't put it in slowly past that point I get the intense headache and sweat amazingly quickly. We have learned to back off and push it in slowly when it hits that point. Is it normal for things to try to close up that slowly? I also feel it when the old catheter is coming out as the balloon goes through that point.

Help us win 50K eur for SCI cure!

Hello CCers,
As some of you may know, the lovely Corinne at the EndParalysis Foundation (endparalysis.org) entered a Dutch competition to win 50k eur. If she wins, all of the money will go directly to one of the labs working on Chondroitinase. (There's loads of additional info on the Foundation website).

Just so you all know that Corinne is not some shady fraudster, here she is collecting her Cure Warrior Advocate award from U2FP's Marilyn:
http://ift.tt/1T04iRu

So, to win the 50k we need votes. To vote, all you have to do is 'like' this video. (It's in Dutch).
http://ift.tt/1T04iRG

We currently have nearly 2600 likes/votes but we need more to ensure we win the 50k.

Please take a second and 'like' the video and ask your friends, families, co-workers etc etc to do the same. The competition closes in a week and I'll be updating this thread daily until then to let you all know how the votes are coming along. There are two other contenders and it's tight!

Remember: 1 'like' = 1 vote

Mods - please allow this post to stay in the Cure forum. Ch'ase has such exciting potential and it would be such a shame if this great funding opportunity didn't get the publicity it deserves.

Many thanks,
Ruth.

I understand that there may be a dispute on whether or not the glial scar has an affect on recovery or not, or if it's a priority for new regeneration or not.But I'm just looking at the actual surgical procedure? Can the scar/ dead tissue on the cord be safely removed??? Every now and then you catch a glimpse that it's been done in China, here there. But I've never found anything conclusive from a very reliable source

41st anniversary

My wife and I are both chair users, our 41st wedding anniversary was yesterday. I proposed In Death Valley on a cross country trip in our van with our dog and cat. We were married a day later in city hall in Las Vegas. It has been a wonderful 41 years.

Time and our disabilities have taken their toll but we continue against the tide.

From Ulysses and per Alfred Lord Tennyson:

"We are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven, that which we are, we are-
One equal temper of heroic hearts,
Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield."

Standing frames, who has a homemade one? Please help me on this

So, I've been trying the evolv glider frame, today was try #3. I like it, I see great benefits. My wife helping me transfer in and out of it the first time was pretty good, the next two times not the best. Anyway, I have a pullup bar that is secured between two posts, I go in spurts of using it, I can't use it unattended like I can the evolv glider. With the glider it seems that one thing that surprisingly keeps me secure is the knee supports that velcro around and keep me secure. When you make your own standing frame do you make something similar to those? I was thinking with my pullup bar if I could figure out how / where to attach knee supports securely that I could use when standing it just might work. In the glider I drop the seat and practice squats safely, maybe I could do this safely with my pullup bar from my chair with proper knee supports. I like the glider and the possibilities but the price is high, which could be worth it. I'm struggling with deciding whether I should try to buy it or not. Feedback please and thoughts on trying to set up secure knee supports for standing and squatting safely at my pullup bar. Thank you!

Bowel care and magic bullets

Hello,

I am having issues with my bowel program and intermittent use of magic bullet suppositories. For the past 11 years, I have regularly done my bowel program every other day using digital stimulation, with the occasional magic bullet or magnesium citrate if things get backed up every couple months. My program typically takes 20 to 30 min. Last spring, I began having to use suppositories more often, as I was regularly constipated and having little luck with digital stimulation. I would have nothing for a program or two and then one large program which would be again followed by nothing for a couple programs. My diet did not change, nor my activity level. Unfortunately, while the suppositories work very well in regularly removing all of the stool from my bowels, they have been taking longer and longer over the past few years (They are not expired as I regularly replace them when needed). It used to be that they would work within 30 or 45 min., but now it is more like 2-4 hours. I will have some stool within the first hour or so, think I am done, and then have an issue in bed a couple of hours later. Every time.

Obviously, nobody wants to wait four hours to fully relieve themselves, especially when they cannot get in and out of their chair themselves. I tried searching for techniques others have tried when running into a delayed suppository reaction but did not find exactly what I was looking for. Anyone else have this problem and developed a solution? If I use a suppository (which I try to only use when I absolutely have to), I usually use one magic bullet or even half of one, which works just as well. I read on here that some people use two at a time? Does that speed things up?

Thanks

Invacare TDX SP Power Chair - Battery Level Indicator Problem

I bought an Invacare TDX SP Power Chair in May 2015. The battery level indicator on the joystick shows a full charge immediately after it's unplugged from the charger after about a half hour it drops three or four bars then will go up to almost full and continues to be sporadic all day. If I turn the chair off and back on sometimes it will show a full charge again but soon drops. It's dropped down to no bars and the screen will turn red and say charge batteries but then will go back up a couple bars. The batteries have been replaced and the charger is good but the problem continues. I never know if I'm getting a false reading or not so it's difficult to go to far not knowing if the chair is going to lose power. So far it hasn't lost power.

Has anyone else with an Invacare TDX SP experienced this problem? The vendor I purchased the chair from has been in contact with Invacare but can't seem to get a answer on the problem. Any feedback would be helpful.

Thanks

Prialt experience

I've been reading about options for medications in my pump. Prialt is an option but most of what I've read is negative (often extremely negative). My research into this medication suggests that many get significant relief. My understanding is that it must be titrated up very slowly due to side effects. I'm wondering if much of the negative feedback is due to stopping medication because of side effects prior to reaching a therapeutic level.

questions

Has anyone used this med for more than one year?
if so, have you found it worth the struggle to get to a therapeutic level?

Thank you in advance to all who take the time to read this and/or reply.

Rotating Mattress troubles.

dimanche 22 novembre 2015

First a little background info. I am a C4-5 quad and have been on an air-mattress for 16 years. For many years I've been using the Invacare Turn-Q mattress but Invacare discontinued making replacement parts. So I bought the Invacare Microair Lateral Rotation MA95Z. Now every time I try the MA95Z I wake up around 4 a.m. burning up with a fever above 99 degrees. I've had the motor replaced and still wake up with a fever. I am frustrated and don't know what to do. Is there another mattress that "breathes" better? Has any one else had this issue with the MA95Z? Thanks in advanced.

FES Hand Crank RT 300

vendredi 20 novembre 2015

Hi - I recently bought a used RT300 FES bike with the hand crank add on from a quadriplegic. I am paraplegic, so I don't need the hand crank unit. To be clear, my current set up consists of the controller (computer), arm / hand crank, and foot crank. I am interested in selling the arm / hand crank part, so you'd need to already have the controller / computer / leg crank, if you wish to peddle with your legs too.

I can't figure out how to post pictures here, so I also created a craigslist ad.

If so, what did you do? I like the extra tone during the day but not the accidents.

How often do you see a doctor?

How often do you see a doctor as a formality?

Not counting when you have an issue and you "need" to see a doctor?

My doctor is kind of forcing me to see him on average 3 times a year.
For the most part this is a total waste of time and just a complete formality.
I can understand having to go in once a year due to prescriptions, medical supplies etc. does this sound reasonable ?

This came to a head as I need a note to describe/detail my injury for a charity submission, and the doctors are demanding I come in for an appointment before it gets written up!

In contrast to my previous doctor, different city. Emailed my doctor the request, received note the next day !!

Autonomic dsyreflexia

T-4 complete, 35 years post-injury.

I was never bothered with AD until this year. Then, boom, I started getting it. I've had a cystoscopy and urodynamics study done in August which found nothing. During the course of the past year it has struck at seemingly random times. On bowel care days, off them, full bladder, nearly empty bladder, naked, clothed, after meals, before meals, morning, noon and night. I had a colonoscopy and AD wasn't triggered (and it indicated I'm in fine shape).

I went to the Dallas VAMC SCI Clinic just nine days ago. I was given a KUB, EKG, blood and urine workups. The doctor called back that afternoon to tell me they found no stones and things looked "fine." My "unconfirmed copy" of my EKG says "Sinus tachycardia, Left posterior fasicular block, Abnormal ECG." I requested the EKG after complaining about an irregular heartbeat: When using my Ozeri CardioTech Digital Blood Pressure Monitor w/Arm Cuff it would skip one or two beeps when reflecting my heart rate. While I understand that the Ozeri is not medical-grade equipment, it does indicate that periodically my heart rate seems a bit irregular. When I was first injured I was diagnosed with a BPVC, but that spontaneously resolved.

I have gone through three months this year with no AD; I've gone though a couple of months with only a single episode. Then there are months where I hit the jackpot and have several episodes, typically spaced days apart. On only two occasions have I been able to determine a probable cause; once removed, the BP lowered to my normal value.

I am a vegetarian, drink distilled water (with a dollop of lemon juice and D-Mannose) and exercise regularly. I don't smoke, don't drink and I get a good night's sleep. I use no prescription medication apart from nitro ointment.

Earlier this year my doctor prescribed nitrogylcerin ointment for treating the elevated BP and that has kept me out of the ER (and Baylor Grapevine does not know how serious AD is, despite patient explanations). That ointment just knocked down my 161/110 to a more reasonable 118/75 in a little over 30 minutes.

I have tried hard to determine the cause of my AD but I am completely baffled.

Urgent! Need advice

I have a 14 fr it is been causing a lot of problems lately. As most of you know that's too small. I had a serious kidney infection in September, My urologist was on vacation then. Now Sunday it clogged had to go to the ER they unplugged it fine let me go, monday it clogged the nurses had to come and fix it, Tuesday night it clogged and now Wednesday morning a clogged again and guess what my urologist is on vacation for two weeks. Today I am feeling rather sick shivering fever seems to be creeping up it was 37.9 now it is 38.1. I drink lots of water I pound back green smoothies that have nothing but organic fresh foods in them. Could high mineral foods be a problem to cause more sediment? I'm not sure what to do if I go to the ER they're just going to unclog it send me on my way this is been a repeat things get sick doctor says go to the ER, take antibiotics unnecessarily get antibiotic resistance repeat. A large a catheter can't even fit in my incision site when the nurse tried... Pretty bad ADD every time I urinate in the penis and I'm starting to worry about the kidneys. But I went to the ER on Monday my blood work was fine they didn't do an ultrasound some doctors tell me that bloodwork is accurate to test kidney function but other doctor say that it's not accurate and you could still have damage without knowing it. It seems like each doctors just passed me off open in hopes they're not the ones that deal with some serious to happen. Dumber doctors prescribe antibiotics right away.

Intermittent Catheterization

I'm a quad without any finger movements but I'm doing intermittent catheterization 3 or 4 times per day (every time I feel that the bladder is full).

I'm curious if using wet wipes to clean my hands and different one to clean the penis head is a good idea. I'm talking about the wet wipes which are used to clean babies skin (skin neutral PH, alcohol free, Vitamin e). Can it be a better alternative to sterile wipes and water with antibacterial soap?

Which method do you recommend for quads with no finger movements?

I have a question for KL D or other moderators regarding upcoming Ureteroscopy.

mardi 17 novembre 2015

Into weeks I will be having a Ureteroscopy to remove three kidney stones in my right kidney. My urologist is very aware of the possibility of AD during a procedure like this. Last year I had Lithotripsy performed on my left kidney for a stone removal and had no AD issues. What other concern should I have that I can talk to my urologist about as well as the anesthesiologist ?

Thank You

Please give me some feedback on the evolv glider. Users, owners, trainers, therapists?

I was looking at the easystand glider and it looks like a very good thing. I contacted the company for a demo, their contact in this are contacted me and supposedly is getting a wheelchair sales company to bring it by for me to try. The guy isn't too pushy, but I think a little. I told him more than once I can't say I'm buying it and would need to figure out the funds, he assured me he understands. The other thing is he says the one he has was used for demonstration but is like new and for that reason he can offer me a discount. Of course I'm cautious of salesman but it may be a good deal. On the one hand I'm thinking they may be a lil pushy, on the other hand I'm thinking just maybe this is working out for a reason. All of that aside, what are your experiences, thoughts on this equipment? I'm willing to sacrifice and work extra hours to pay for it, but I don't want to just get it because it's there, I only want it if it will add great potential of progress or even make me feel like I got a full workout in. Heres a short video I found: https://youtu.be/whEkufRPIo4 It's a scary thing to spend money you don't have and later regret it, but some things are worth it with spinal cord injury. I hope to figure out if this is just a pushy sales team, or if this would truly be worth my effort. Please help. Thank you.

Party & BS

Hello

I am currently doing intermittent cathaterization and have a hard time staying dry while I'm out with my friends having a couple of drinks. I tried to set up a timer in my pocket that would remind me to go to the bathroom but even with 20-30 min intervals I was still wetting myself.

Today I decided to invest in a leg bag and a condom catheter to alleviate that problem. After long evaluation of my bladder I noticed that it doesn't "spasm" it just release all fluids.

Is there any tips I could get for using leg bag ? Also if there are any health concers to be switching between IC and leg bag.

Thanks !

An Affordable FES Cycle!

Hello CareCure!

I am an engineer that founded a startup company that has a mission to develop affordable FES cycles for home use. We want everyone who could benefit from FES cycling technology to have access to it.
But 'affordable' is very subjective, so I wanted to start a casual discussion on what people think a good price point for a home FES cycling product would be, what features they want in an FES cycle, and more importantly, what features would you be willing to live without in order to make it more affordable?

Your feedback is much appreciated!

Darn Klebsiella

Hi, I am new here, I see a lot of interesting thoughts and advice. I been a T2 post 40+ years and have worked 38 years. I have always worn an external catheter made myself or used urocon type. Last year I been having an increase of uti infections with Klebsiella Pneumoniae being the culprit, clean catch and off to lab I go. I can?t remember last I time got real ill and I don?t want to, So I went to local Uro and had Cat Scan done and no stones anywhere and kidneys good, Then cysto done and nothing wrong but thickening wall of bladder..Uro put me on Rapaflo to relax the sphincter to see if it would help. He believes Urecholine doesn?t work, But I do notice urination after taking it (25 mg 4X) been on this all my years, along with Vitamin C 500 mg 4X.
I cannot get rid of the same bug this year. I?ve had several UTI?s about 1 a month for the last 5 to 6 months and Uro or primary doc gets me on Cipro for 7days (allergic to Bactrim, ok with macrodantin) maybe I should be a longer script?. I?m looking for advice from SCI nurse or anyone. My Uro wants me to start IC myself now but it has me anxious to concerned to start this, because of the huge life style change. The Uro sent me home with script for red silicone 16fr caths and a booklet on how to. I questioned some DME?s to order and found there arelots of type of Caths and for insurance my preference the script should be more specific. All were surprised he did not have anyone show me how to learn/train on use IC especially an SCI patient, I called back and a nurse stated that they do provide training. The Uro had me stop the Vitamin C which I?ve taken for years. I thought VC was supposed to be good for bladder, he disagrees. He believes D-mannose and cranberry supplements are not proven so doesn?t see benefit. I know I don?t void totally and hence bugs can infect me, after reading so many threads here I?m at a loss as to first how to get rid of this
Klebsiella Pneumoniae infection for good and second better bladder management. Will IC get rid of the infection? Or just lesson them. Why does it keep coming back within 2 weeks. Am I being bullheaded in the change to IC and hurting myself. Can?t I use an external cath? Does any para?s?. I wonder how I will know when to cath thru out the day. I do not want an accident occurring while driving or at work, or anywhere visiting, etc. and what about sleeping? Since I have a spastic bladder that just voids. Should I seek a SCI specialist center since my city is small? Or second opinion. You would think I'd be more educated on all these things!

Catheter Clogging?

For the last 6 month my Foly catheter has been backing up more than ever. I changed it every month. Now every 3 weeks. Things seem better but what is causing this my urologist offers me nothing. I wonder if it the Bard Silver IC caths are they making them cheaper? I sent a few into Bard but no replies. Any suggestions to prevent this?

Tilite repairs.

Now that I've got a new wheelchair, I want to repair my tilite chair.

My tilite is a TR2. Bought 6 years ago. I have 2 problems with it and would like some suggestion on repairs.

1. My wheel seems splaying at one side, making it a little left heavy. How do I rectify this problem? Is it the camber or the wheel? Would it be solved by buying a new camber tube? Does tilite still sell camber tube for TR2? Can I get the CF camber tube on TR2?

2. My left fork stuck in rotation, felt like there's friction when turning. Is it the bearing? Do I need to change the whole assembly?

I love this chair. This chair has followed me all around the world and a trustworthy companion. 5 continents and still going strong except for the few problems that is bounded to happen after all the abuse. It's sad to let it go collecting dust.

Cheers.

Federal Work Program Corruption.

https://youtu.be/Wjx1KcsO2y0
CNN: CNN)The nation's premier federal program that provides work for people who are severely disabled is mired in widespread corruption, financial fraud and violations of the law, numerous sources tell CNN. And instead of helping the severely disabled find work, the taxpayer-funded agency is at times allowing jobs to be taken away from the disabled, the sources say.AbilityOne, along with the nonprofit agency that manages its program for the severely disabled, SourceAmerica, are being investigated by authorities for illegal operations, financial fraud, mismanagement, operating in violation of the law, steering of contracts, and possibly obstruction of justice. Several inside sources tell CNN the program is among the worst cases of its type they've ever seen in a federal agency.
CNN has learned the U.S. Department of Justice has begun its own investigation into the various allegations. In addition, at least four separate inspectors general offices have active investigations into AbilityOne and SourceAmerica. The OIG from the General Services Administration, Department of Defense, the Veterans Administration and the State Department are among those investigating; their investigation is being led by the State Department IG.

The AbilityOne program funnels about $3 billion per year of taxpayer money to fund contracts for goods and services across the country. For a company to get a contract with AbilityOne, 75% of that company's work must be performed by blind or severely disabled employees, who cannot work in a normal job.
But CNN has learned that as many as half the companies contracting with SourceAmerica under AbilityOne may be operating in violation of the law, without enough severely disabled employees, according to sources with knowledge of the program. There are no such allegations of wrongdoing with AbilityOne's contracts for blind people.
What this means is the program responsible for making sure severely disabled people are being hired with taxpayer money through federal contracts is not enforcing or following the law, according to numerous inside sources with knowledge of the organization.
AbilityOne is run by a commission made up of presidential appointees. While they must approve all contracts, sources tell CNN they are essentially a "rubber stamp," for the referrals sent to them by SourceAmerica, which essentially operates independently with contracts for the severely disabled. So, one key allegation is that SourceAmerica, a nonprofit agency with virtually no oversight other than AbilityOne, largely decides how roughly $2.3 billion in U.S. taxpayer money is spent, according to numerous sources.

EMPI is being eliminated

EMPI, the makers of the commonly used neuromuscular electronic stimulator, is ceasing to exist as of Friday 2015 ? 11 ? 20, I think. DJO Global, the parent company, is eliminating that division. If you have Empi business, I would call them. And if you want to unit, you might try now too. I got a very good deal on an Empi Elite.if you need any manuals or literature, I would check now because I don?t know what they?re doing with their website.

Sorry, I can copy their number, but by you can find it on the DJ O global website

STD and parents

I was struggling with many UTI's in my quad life, but the last one is a completely another story. The left testicle got red and inflated. The urologist confirmed that it is an epididymis. He put me on antibiotics considering that the UTI is cause of epididymis. The urine exam's confirmed that I had E-Coli. I also cath myself when I feel that the bladder is full and this can be a cause for epididymis too. I'm ASIA B.

Now the urine is clear and fine, but the testicle state didn't improve too much in the last week. I'm on the 3rd week under antibiotics. Five days ago I had the feeling that something comes out of my penis. When I checked it was a watery substance and it wasn't urine leaks. It happened three times since. I remember that when I first read about the causes of epididymis the STDs are a cause too. I didn't change the partner, but I need to be sure that I have a STD or not in order to properly manage the health and relationship situation.

The problem is that I see the urologist with my parents. They won't let me alone with the urologist because I'm not independent at all. Also I can't tell to the urologist that I might have a STD and I need to be tested.

I can ask for urine exams in order to be sure that I have STD, but while I'm still under antibiotics, I'm not sure if the result will be correct.

My questions are:
1) how can I find an online urologist in order to talk with?
2) which are the blood tests that can tell the presence of a STD.
3) does the urine exams have any relevance while I'm under the treatment with antibiotics?
4) how to tell to my urologist that I might have a STD while my parents are near me?

Many thanks for your time and valuable advice's!!

2. What dont you like?

3. what environments do you experience particular difficulties in navigating that maybe arent being addressed?

Urine bag is turning blue.

Hello, I have a indwelling catheter
Has anybody ever heard of an overnight bag turning blue-green? It's not the whole bag its just where the urine is running down or the urine touches it. Just recently change my overnight bag, it's a totally different brand and model. Does this mean I have some kind of infection or something? I can't find any information on the make of the bag.

I've only had an indwelling for a year now, I don't know if this is a common thing.

Also, I had to change the original overnight bag because it had some kind of valve that seem to be leaking.

This had this happen a couple of times, I just thought it was complications with my medication.

My doctor has me on a four day regiment of antibiotics per month for catheter change. I seem to have problems with chronic infections.

I have to have an indwelling now because the multiple sclerosis has taken away my ability to self cath.

Guidance regarding book on sci

Dear members
I am c5 quad 13 years post sci. In my country majority of people suffering from sci are less educated, they don't understand english and therefore they cannot take advantage of all the information regarding sci available on internt to educate themselves to live good life with sci.
I have thirteen years experience on living with sci. In these years I have learnt a lot from internet specially care cure community. Now I want to educate my people regarding sci. Therefore I am writing a book in local language so that they can find all essential information regarding living life with sci at one place.
So far I have written five chapter which are Introduction, bladder menagment, bowel menagment, sexuality, prevention from pressure sores. I want to make it a book of ten chapter.
Please suggest about which other topic should i write so that to make it a complete book on life after sci. Please also give link to the informations.

Has bowel care changed or improved in the last 20 years?

samedi 14 novembre 2015

I'm just wondering. Are there any actual new developments? It seems like everything people try, mostly without much effect at least in my case, is basically the same stuff that's been around for years. Even colostomy is a century old. Peristeen, by the way, it turns out I'm not a candidate for - and the doctor I talked to didn't even think it would work for me.

It is impressive to me how glacial the progress of medicine seems to be.

Emotion Wheels M15 Parts

Anyone know where I might be able to purchase some parts for my e-motion m15 wheels? Aside from the manufacturer who won't deal with anyone but a dealer so I am told.

The reason I ask is the dealer I initially bought them through roughly five years ago just informed me Friday they would no longer be servicing or ordering parts for them. Because it seems the batteries they ordered for me back in August they took a big loss in reimbursement.

There are no other dealers around my area that deals with them, anyone know of a place that might sell aftermarket parts?

O and in case anyone is familiar with them the main problem I'm having is one push rim is staying engaged and we can't figure out why. There is nothing visibly binding it up thanks in advance for any information you can provide.

C5-6 quad, no triceps, new chair help please!

Hello! I'm a somewhat high functioning quad with no triceps. I currently ride a ZRA with roughly 3 inches dump on 24 inch wheels. I have always set up my chairs So that I am able to lock my arms out on the push rims for weight shifts. I believe this limits my ability to push well, causes shoulder pain and screws with my already horrible balance. I'm interested in going to a chair with ergo seating and bigger wheels to see if I can't feel more "bucketed" in for lack of a better term. I play rugby so I already know the closer my wheels are to my shoulders, the better pushing results.

my main concern if I go to this set up Is how I'm going to do my weight shifts?? So if there's anyone out there In my similar situation with roughly the same physical inabilities who can chime in, I would greatly appreciate!!!!

cheers!

Which Basketball wheelchair: I want your 2 cents and more.

I thinking of going for the CAF grant for a basketball wheelchair.

But which chair? and what are the best sites to look at for basketball chairs?

At the moment I using the spare standby chairs and modifying them with plywood and gait belts to make them work etc.
I am being seduced by the prospect of being able to use the chair for Tennis too pros/cons ? just so many tennis courts around and seems like it would be good exercise etc. and justification for more space for another chair if I could use it for tennis and basket ball etc.

For basket ball what are the rules of the thumb that folks follow?

I'm T4 - 6' : 220lbs 18"wide seat, 17" deep, need really good back support.

Leaning towards 26" wheels.

How do you decide how much camber you want.

Do you go with similar dump to your regular chair? more/less?

How adjustable ?

Any thoughts, suggestions, pointers and what to avoid etc.

Cheers.

Fastest custom chair manufacturer

I need a custom rigid chair asap. I am very tall so need custom, and my current chair is about to collapse into a pile of rust any day now. I can pay out of pocket. I just need to know who can make me a chair the fastest.

I started ordering a chair from Tilite through Northern Seating & Mobility during the summer, and we still have not even gotten the paperwork into the insurance company for approval. I don't know who's screwing up, but I think it's either the local Tilite rep or someone at Tilite itself.

Anyway, I am ready to pay out of pocket just to get something fast before I am immobilized altogether. Please help me out with recs for a decent manufacturer who can act quickly if I pay cash.

Elevated Sleeping Heart Rate and Daytime Sleepiness

I am a 32-year-old male C4/5 complete quad, 13 years post injury. I recently got a Fitbit Charge HR to monitor my activity (not so much steps) and heart rate. I use an RT 300 twice-weekly, stand twice-weekly, and do wrist weights twice-weekly. I always wanted to know how much my heart rate changes!

Since getting the activity tracker, I have learned that might heart rate goes up when I go to sleep. It's nothing crazy, but it goes from my resting heart rate of ~65 BPM to ~80/90 BPM. As the night goes on, my heart rate slowly trends down. It's fairly linear. It trends down until about noon, even though I wake up at 5:30 AM during the week and 9 AM on the weekend. When I googled this, but they maainly discuss very rapid heart rates (>110 BPM).

I sleep on my back and think that it's possible that I have sleep apnea. I always feel like I sleep really well at night. I wake up occasionally, but I fall asleep easily. However, in the last couple of years I started having spurts during the day where I'm uncontrollably tired. It's usually when my brain is very active (manipulating spreadsheets at work on my computer, in a meeting where I'm just listening, etc.) Is this worth trying to get a sleep study done?

Any suggestions on underwear

I wear convention boxer shorts but find that they are not cut for someone who sits all the time. I also have difficulty pulling them up fully.
I ordered a pair of Easy Undies which were a disaster - the Velcro bonded the the sheets and it was impossible to position them.
Does anyone have good ideas for underwear.

Untethering the spinal cord

I'm considering having this done. Brief background, c5-6 complete injured in 94. Started with mild pain around 99 that has since become completely debilitating. Have tried all conservative measures plus pain pump and neurostimulator. My understanding:

- should not consider unless pain is "late-onset" (1 year+ post injury)
- about 50% realize reduced pain
- 80%+ realize halted progress of damage related to Tethered spine (minimal if any return of lost function)
- many surgeons will not perform procedure strictly for pain relief. Must be loosing function/sensation

My pain was late onset. I have no loss of sensation or function. Just ever increasing pain. I'm not a tough guy so, that's plenty ;-)

Questions:

Are points above inaccurate in any way?
Even without loosing function, is it unwise to pursue strictly for pain relief?
The 50% who realized a reduction, are there any studies that show how much pain was reduced (25%, 50%, etc)
Would anyone who has had this surgery discuss their experience?

Note: I fully realize that the ultimate decision is on me. So, will treat feedback just as friendly advice.

Greatly appreciat all responses.

Aero T vs TRA questions for new wheelchair user?

vendredi 13 novembre 2015

Hello all! I'm new, and I hope it's okay I've joined and am posting - I have no SCI but when googling around for wheelchair info this forum kept coming up so I figured I'd cut out the middleman and join!

I've got a genetic connective tissue disorder that, while not technically degenerative, does make me more susceptible to damage and accumulating damage and it gets worse all the time. The biggest things affected are my joints, skin, and cardiac/autonomic nervous system. The pain, partial joint dislocations, and dysautonomia are bad enough now when walking short distances that I'm in the process of getting my first wheelchair, and I'm extremely excited for it and for the quality of life increase that will hopefully follow.

I've gotten all the way to the ordering process, and demoed chairs last week. The one I liked best, and we're in the process of ordering and getting approved, is a TiLite Aero T with several titanium upgrades (to reduce weight, I'm guessing?). When I got home, of course I did more research, and it seems like a TRA is basically the all-titanium Aero T. IIRC the TRA would be a K9 and the aero T a K5, but other than that, the cost difference associated, and materials I have a few questions about their differences:

  • Is the construction and geometry similar and the only difference really just materials?
  • One of the things I liked best about the Aero T was the kind of stiff, responsive, sporty feel - is this the result of the aluminum, or could it just be that it was the dual/box type frame and best fitting chair to me that I tried that day?
  • TiLite's website says a main difference in titanium vs aluminum is vibration absorption and energy efficiency (efficiency in the wheeling, I'm not sure how to put that in technical terms). We selected frog leg caster forks for my Aero T - would these negate most of the difference in vibration absorption between titanium and aluminum? I'm sure I wouldn't notice the difference either way but my faulty collagen might, lol!

If it's relevant

  • I'm around 5'5" and fluctuate between 120-140 - thanks comorbid gastroparesis! (and yes, I mentioned the fluctuation in my eval)
  • We're also looking at trying to get me a SmartDrive power assist due to my shoulder and finger pain/subluxations and a possible shoulder impingement.

I'm sure at this point I wouldn't call up my DME place and ask them to cancel the Aero T and look into the TRA instead, but these questions are gonna keep bugging me unless I get them answered somehow! Thanks everyone, and again I hope it's okay I'm posting!

Oh, and one unrelated question - on the demo Aero T the cushion/front of the seat came up to about 3 inches behind the back of my knees, and when ordering we added an inch on to that measurement just because it felt okay but I felt like I could use a little more stability there. I can't find anything on what the optimum is and my DME said it can vary from person to person - is that probably a good way to go, though?

Maximum Bupivacain dose

I'm a c5-6 complete. Like many of you, I battle chronic pain. I have a Medtronic pain pump and am trying various meds. So far, narcotics seem to do nothing but produce side effects. Bupivacain, however, seems to be helping some. It's really tough to tell with highs and lows but seem to be having fewer really bad days. The current dose is 8.8 micrograms (I think is correct unit) daily.

Does anyone know what the maximum dosage may be?
Anyone have good luck with this medication?

Thank you in advance for any feedback. I greatly appreciate the time so many spend providing information.

How do you stay active in the winter?

Hey there ladies and gents!

so as my thread title says, how do you all stay active in the winter?

I am a C6 quad who has been hurt for about 9 years, and over the summer I have gotten really independent as far as getting out of the house independently. I drive a VW hatch back which I transfer into and break the chair down. I am really dreading winter (I live in New England) and I don't want to lose all the independence I've gained because of the snow! i don't have a garage so I was wondering if you guys have any tips for pushing through the snow and transferring in/out of cars in the snow?

hope I posted this in the right section! Also what are your winter hobbies?!

gait training, leg wights?

I've been using 2.5 lb leg weights and think it has helped. 5lb weights are much harder and sometimes cause my weaker leg to get caught on the walker. Just wondering if the extra and effort and energy needed to use the heavier weights should ultimately carry over to progress / stronger legs if consistently used?

TFCC injury

Is anybody suffered a TFCC (triangular fibro cartilaginous complex) wrist injury? It's a tear of the cartilage in the wrist that holds together three bones. Once you have it hurts to bear any weight on the hand, lean on it, push a chair, or do just about anything. It's been confirmed by MRI and I haven't found a single physician willing to do anything about it, and I have been to several locally known hand specialists.

Some say a lot of people have these injuries and can live with it. I think other physicians don't think I need my hands and therefore don't want to get involved in my case.

It's been three years now and only getting worse. Pain is so bad it hurts all the time even through the night.

Rocking chair for leg / core exercise?

I've been thinking a rocking chair might help things. If I sit in one I can rock using both my legs and core, but I've never really tried it consistently. My thing is I don't want to ask someone to help me transfer unless I know what I'm doing will be beneficial. I was thinking sittin in the rocking chair and putting my feet up on a footstool might allow me to get more of a total gym like movement and be a way to strengthen and stretch my legs. Thoughts or ideas?

Thank you.,

nustep vs easystand glider benefits?

I recently have been looking at both of these and wondering if the benefits are worth the cost. I think it is but have never used either of these. I talked to a dealer for the glider and he's going to try and get one in my area for me to try in a few weeks. He says it's one that's like new but barely used and he can offer me a discount. Probably his spiel but I think I should try it. There's a nustep at a rehab place that I'm hoping will let me try it out.

I liked the nustep for the way it moves the legs, knee to chest motion? I like the glider but it seems to be a little different kind of movement. Which one would offer the limbs the most movement that might counter tightness from sitting in a wheelchair mainly? They are different products and both would be great, but would one be more beneficial over the other? I'm incomplete c2 and rely on a powerchair, I exercise and practice with a up n free gait trainer, it uses a piston and bicycle seat and a waist strap for safety. When practicing I walk around the house without fear or need for a spotter. I think I have the potential to go beyond this, and not sure how far or not even stuck on I have to "walk" or screw everything else. But I know I can do much more and achieve bounds beyond my current position. I'm just trying to figure out how and maybe there is some equipment that will help me exercise better to reach and even push beyond my goals.

Thank you for your feedback.

Wheelchair battery terminal adapter?

Got a set of batteries that I would like to put into my Invacare Ranger X, but the terminals are different. The batteries I acquired are MK, part number "M34 SLD G." They appear to have 1/4 inch threaded inserts for the terminals.

The Invacare Ranger X needs a battery with what looks like post terminals, "G (T881)." The battery it will be replacing is part number "M24 SLD G."

Is there an adapter out there somewhere that will thread into the "M34 SLD G" batteries so that it will have posts that will be able to replace the "M24 SLD G" batteries?

jeudi 12 novembre 2015

Once again I am terrible at choosing the correct sub forums to post in so apologies if this is in the wrong area.

My chair is an ex-demo, fits in every way except the footrest height. At it's highest, my heels dont reach it barefoot or with flat shoes on. In whopping big heels it's lovely!
So I went to Clarks Rubber yesterday, got some high density foam and adhesive, I had some velcro at home already....
It's quite crude but I'm chuffed. Still not quite tall enough barefoot, good with my 'mid height' shoes, so I'm going to get another piece of foam and make another one... And then I can swap around depending what shoes I am wearing!
